Common questions

When will the project be completed?

Project completion is scheduled for Summer 2009.

How will the project affect local residents?

As much work as possible will be carried out during the daytime but for safety reasons, some work over the railway can only be carried out when trains are not operating and the electricity supply to the railway can be isolated. Throughout the project every effort will be made to minimise impact on local residents and others living and working around Acton. The project is registered with the Considerate Constructors Scheme and the project team work to a strict code of construction practice.

How will the project affect road users and rail passengers?

The project has been designed to allow road and rail traffic to run normally throughout the works period. Two lanes of traffic in both directions and all existing pedestrian routes on this section of the A40 will be maintained most of the time throughout the project.

When will traffic management work begin?

Works to move traffic from existing lanes onto new routes through the site are scheduled to commence from early 2007, once key sections of the new bridges and service diversions are complete. This is necessary to allow the remaining new sections of bridges to be built, as well as the demolition of the remainder of the existing bridges.

Any traffic management work required prior to early 2007 will be carried out during off peak times. Further details can be found on the home page and Engineering pages.

Two lanes of traffic in both directions on this section of the A40 will be maintained most of the time throughout the project, and full details of changes will be publicised in advance, including on this website.

Will pedestrian, cycle and bus routes be affected by the traffic management measures?

Temporary diversions will be put in place to provide safe pedestrian and cycle routes, separated from the construction works. The existing bus routes on this section of the A40 will be maintained throughout the project.

Why is night work required?

As much work as possible will be carried out during the daytime, but for safety reasons some work over the railway can only be carried out when trains are not operating and the electricity supply to the railway can be isolated. Monitoring of noise levels will be carried out throughout the project.

How many lanes will there be on this section of the A40 upon project completion?

The new section of road will carry two lanes of traffic in each direction, as well as providing new cycle paths on both sides.

Why will the project take three years?

The A40 is one of London's most important road networks and the two bridges cross some of the capital's busiest rail networks. The new bridges need to be built in such a way that we can keep traffic flowing on the A40 and rail services running beneath the bridges. As there are only a limited number of periods when train services do not operate and safe access can be granted, we will only have these limited periods to undertake works above the tracks.

How much will the project cost?

The main bridge replacement works will be approximately £16 million. TfL is funding the project.

Who is involved in the project?

Transport for London, Hyder Consulting and Alfred McAlpine. For further details, visit the Partners page.

Why is the existing footbridge at Perryn Road going to be replaced?

The existing footbridge is in a poor structural condition and does not provide access for people with limited mobility or cyclists. TfL’s initial decision to replace the footbridge with a road level crossing controlled by traffic lights was reviewed in light of local concerns and a study of the movement of pedestrians and vehicle traffic in the A40 Western Avenue area. The footbridge will now be replaced by a new pedestrian footbridge that will be accessible to all.

Will there be cycle paths on the new road?

New cycle paths will be provided on both sides of the new section of road.

What benefits will the project bring?

The replacement of the bridges will deliver significant improvements, including:
